18.10.2014 – Vienna, Gasometer
Mike Rosenberg a.k.a.
I hate“ (i hate queuing up for nova-rock toilets, statt festival toilets…)
Mike Rosenberg a.k.a Passenger entered the stage with a smile five minutes before the advertised time, showing that it is in his nature to perform earlier rather than later. He does not need to be modest seeing as the first three rows were tightly packed with young women singing along, staring at him with idolizing glares, as is the case with rockstars such as him.
With personal stories and chitchat, Mike created a familiar atmosphere, interacting with fans as if everyone at the event were old acquaintances. The mood was nothing short of excellent when even during several songs, engaging with the audience through conversation. His appreciation for his fans is undeniable.
His first number was „Rolling Stone“, beginning on a somber and tranquil note, although this was not the case throughout. Energetic, varyant, sometimes powerful, sometimes emotional, deftly leading the music lovers and women through a variety of moods.
Mike’s cover of „Sound of Silence“ could possibly be the most impassioned cover of all time, switching from quiet moments to a vigorous guitar solo, and possibly having more of an impact than the original song.
A bonus for Austrian fans was that it was clear that he has been here and has memories of the country, as he personalized the lyrics from the song „I Hate“ (I hate queuing up for „Nova Rock toilets“, rather than „festival toilets“)
The most electrifying moment was the choir-like performance by the entire audience; full of energy, applause, and boundless energy.
„Start A Fire“ was a spirited performance, performed alongside the opening band „The Once“. Mike told the story of how he met them; during a radio gig in Scotland that he showed up for half an hour early. „That’s how Rock’n’Roll I am!“ he exclaimed, in reference to his overly punctual nature.
Mike is an artist, a dreamer, a story teller. His stories about his time as a street musician and playing in pubs are told as if they happened just yesterday. He encourages anyone who may have doubts to believe in themselves, to pursue one’s goals. He is a role model for people pursuing any form of art.
Passenger’s charming personality easily won over the audience, including me. Stellar Stuff.
