2010 erschien Home Is Where The Heart Breaks, wofür My Glorious sogar mit dem hochkarätigen International Independent Music Award (IMA) ausgezeichnet wurden.

…So antwortete Raphael mir einmal auf meine Frage: „What’s next?“

Raphael Wressnig is offering his „Soul Gumbo“ and his loyal partners, sax-extraordinaire Craig Handy and soulful guitarist Alex Schultz, as well as the master of New Orleans style drumming Johnny Vidacovich join forces to create a musical hybrid of jazz, R&B, soul and funk!
Gumbo is a traditional dish that originated in southern Louisiana. The dish combines ingredients and culinary practices of several cultures, including West African, French, Spanish, German, and Choctaw. Just like the cuisine, the music of New Orleans borrowed from different traditions and assumes different styles. It is usually regarded as birthplace of jazz, but it is also famous for its rock’n’roll or New Orleans funk or R&B. Both, Raphael Wressnig and Craig Handy have just recorded albums that have that funky edge and present the groovy amalgam of jazz and blues the „Big Easy“ is renowned for. Johnny Vidacovich is a veteran of New Orleans jazz and R&B and Alex Schultz has been a featured guitarist on some of the Crescent City based Black-Top Records releases. This fine quartet will spice it up, just like some Louisiana hot-sauce!
Raphael Wressnig, based in Austria but frequently on the road, is not your ordinary B-3 organ player. He’s actually one of a kind: a young master of the imposing, large instrument who is expansive in his breadth of expertise. He’s technically fluent in the blues, in jazz, in soul, and in funk, and he concocts exciting mixed-genre music from his fervid imagination. Influenced by royal predecessors like Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Booker T. Jones and Joe Zawinul. This self-effacing musician, a native of Graz in southeast Austria, has recorded at least 17 feature albums and appeared as a guest on about 35 others. In Spring 2013, he was honored with a nomination for best organ player of the year in Downbeat Magazine. In January 2014 Wressnig has recorded his upcoming album at Music Shed Studios in New Orleans featuring Craig Handy, Alex Schultz, legendary bass-player George Porter Jr. (The Meters), piano-man and soulful troubadour Jon Cleary, R&B icon Walter „Wolfman“ Washington, Nigel Hall and one of the funkiest drummers around, Stanton Moore.
Craig Handy just released his album „2nd Line Smith“ on the venerated OKeh label, a division of Sony Masterworks. Handy draws from his fondness for the music of New Orleans, smack attached to the groove-filled re-imaginings of originals and standards by the late, great organist Jimmy Smith. Handy was born in Oakland, CA, but later moved to New York and began several associations with formidable artists including master drummers Art Blakey and Roy Haynes, South African melodist Abdullah Ibrahim, the Mingus Dynasty Band and was the featured soloist in the music theme for the „Bill Cosby Show“. He also relished musical range by performing with veteran vocalist bandleaders such as the iconic Betty Carter and later the irrepressible Dee Dee Bridgewater. Handy was also a convincing and telegenic actor in Robert Altman’s film Kansas City, portraying saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. He was part of the band “Chartbusters”, featuring alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith and drummer Idris Muhammad. Handy toured or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Cedar Walton, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, George Adams, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, Charles Tolliver, the John Hicks Legacy Band, Kirk Lightsey, the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra and most notably „The Cookers“ – a collective of stalwart leaders renowned for playing that simmers or surges to a boiling point – with brethren Billy Harper, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, and David Weiss.
Drawing on the musical heritage of New Orleans, Johnny Vidacovich has become one of the best drummers in a city known for its drummers. Born and bred in New Orleans, Vidacovich has the city’s unique, syncopated backbeat running in his veins. Many outsiders have sought to imitate that sound which comes so naturally to those who grew up exposed to the Big Easy’s street music traditions. One can hear the beat of the street in multifarious places, from the music of the Mardi Gras Indians to the Neville Brothers to Vidacovich himself. He is the quintessential New Orleans jazz drummer, with all the exuberance and skill befitting one who grew up in the birthplace of jazz. Since starting to play the drums at the age of ten, performing has been the passion of Johnny Vidacovich. From French Quarter clubs to the big stages, he has shared his talents with greats like New Orleans‘ „Tan Canary“ Johnny Adams, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John Charles Neville, Harry Connick and Mose Allison as well as many jazz and blues icons such as John Scofield, Rick Margitza, Willy DeVille and many others. He was leading „Astral Project“, the seminal New Orleans contemporary jazz group.
Alex Schultz belongs to the first-tier of American blues guitarists, possessing a natural affinity for jazz, funk, soul, r&b and gospel. Schultz has family roots in New Orleans but he was born in NYC, schooled at Berklee and moved to L.A. in 1979. He became one of the icons of West-Coast Blues. He has toured and recorded with Rod Piazza and William Clarke, Lester Butler, Hank Ballard and many more. Schultz worked with Jimmy Rogers, Lowell Fulson, Louis Myers, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Robert Ward, Earl King, Snooks Eaglin, Albert Collins, Larry Davis, etc. and supported the likes of Albert King, BB King, Al Green, Robert Cray, Dr. John, The Neville Bros., The Allman Bros. and more. In 2004 Schultz released his solo album “Think About It” that features Finis Tasby, Tad Robinson and Lynwood Slim. Lately Alex Schultz did a lot of freelance work with Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, Big Pete and Raphael Wressnig. The team of Wressnig and Schultz blends blues with jazz, soul and funk in a tasteful way. They recorded two albums together „(Don’t Be) Afraid To Groove“ and „Soul Gift“ featuring Deitra Farr, Tad Robinson, Kirk Fletcher, „Sax“ Gordon.
Update: 6.8.2014:
We have recovered the pics we took at the Esseker album release party for their new long player „Coalescence“ at U4 in Vienna!

Europe’s premier cheerdance group the „Milleniumdancers“ dancing especially prepared choreographies at our urban videoshoots in Vienna.

The Popfest Wien has been a recurring event since 2010 and four years later it seems to have truly come into fruition, providing a high quality festival in the middle of Vienna. The Karlsplatz and it’s surrounding buildings become the site of a bubbly melting pot of viennese music as party goers get to witness stylish local acts in a terrific enviroment. The Seebühne especially is a joy to behold on these hazy summer days as thousands of people flock to the fest to celebrate music in the spirit of summer.
Other than its function as an urban open air festival alternative the popfest has also proven to be a great platform for exclusively local talent to shine. Music lovers can revel in a wide array of genres on display reaching from pop, blues, electro, rock and jazz of homegrown music.
We were there on friday and saturday and came back with some impressions from artists the Seebühne, Red Bull Brandwagen and the TU Prechtlsaal as well as beautiful people enjoying a lovely party and making Karslplatz feel like home.

Somewhere in the idyllic Styrian mountainside, it’s a gorgeous summer’s day and you might expect locals in Lederhosen yodelling away merrily, alas instead Austria’s Youth in Revolt is treated to an outburst of electrically amplified anger….and copious amounts of skanking. Kapfenberg’s Overdrive Encore festival has maintained a steady presence on the Austrian festival circuit over the last decade. This time round the lineup included calibers like Leftover Crack, I Wrestled a Bear Once, Stick to your Guns, Texas in July and Reel Big Fish.
It’s fascinating to observe the movement of the crowd as the genres shift around it. Sharing music online and advanced distribution networks have allowed people to surf through the waves of the amazing amounts of music out there, it’s a lovely thing to see a bunch of metal heads happily skanking away mere moments after you thought their singing voices only exist in drop D screaming.
The mood and attitude of the people at the festival was both positive and lighthearted, I’d guess there were about a 1000 people there during the headliners, compared to some of the massive events like Nova Rock and Frequency this may seem modest, but it’s a sweet thing that international bands choose to come to a location like Kapfenberg to play for their fans. In terms of organization everyone was helpful and friendly, since everything there was very close together fans had the chance to be very close to the bands, both during the concerts and the interview sessions.
After making some videos for them last year at Arena in Vienna, this time round we got the chance to film an Interview with the Reel Big Fish. They really took the time to speak to us and it was as absurd as it was informative. Awesome times. Check out the first clip from our „chat“ with them here, Cheers to that!

Her songs speak of heartbreak, rejection and trying to find your way. But they are also cautiously optimistic tales of freedom, balance and self expression aimed at a society that was not always fair in its treatment of the individual. In a conformist society sometimes the hardest thing is to simply be yourself.
As a child she had to decide between her two biggest passions, ice hockey and music. Hockey won out, for the moment, leading Virginia through a successful professional sporting career that saw her win world cup honors in North Korea (!) and find club level success in Sweden’s highest league. She was however stopped dead in her tracks by one of the great banes of our modern times; Burnout. Needing a break from the rigours of competition, she moved back to Vienna where she rediscovered her first love, and began writing songs to deal with apparent defeat, all of this by age 20.
However, not all was lost, turns out she had such a knack for songwriting that she won an acclaimed Singer/Songwriter Workshop in London in 2011. As a reward Martin Smith of ELO helped her produce her first demo „Let’s say“. Back in Vienna she continued production on tunes like „Let it Shine“ and „I Wish“. Eventually Thomas Rabitsch took interest in her and helped her produce the first song to garner some attention „I’m over you“.
Currently Virginia is making waves with her song „Rockin“, receiving considerable online attention, tv coverage and radio airplay. Her first full album is in the works and will hit the airwaves in early 2015. Stay tuned!
At her lowest point she made the decision to not give in, not surrender. Thus we were rewarded with a gem of talent that is rare in it’s pure affection for the craft, in this industry the indomitable spirit of sportsmanship can be a boon, a sign that if you rise to the occasion you can indeed succeed just as long as you believe in yourself. Rock on!

Welcome to the pilot episode of rockvideos.at „On Air„!
On Air is an online video magazine from Vienna.Since 2011 our goal has been to provide musicians with a platform. Since then we have covered, spread our own produced live concert footage and brought concert impression with our article to the growing masses of fans.
Now I decided to start our own Show, by packing several artists into one show we want to create a momentum, we want to share our concert experience with everyone, we want to promote it, we want it to be seen.

Yola B. who already sang with Parov Stelar und now part of Deladap! hosts the show.
With her Namibian flavored English she leads through the programme with charme, humor and grace.
Blonde-haired. Blue-eyed. Statuesque physique. Foreign pedigree. Soul singer? With the modern retro-soul revival ushering in a sea of British Ruth Browns, there might be a tricky urge to assume you already know who the singer-songwriter-producer-multi-instrumentalist known as Lylit is.
We asked them about topics from ranging favorite tour moments to character analysis and gained an insight into their inner workings
Kitty in a Casket consider themselves to be more punk than psychobilly, maybe it’s just Billy Bat’s hair that beggars belief? We’ll find out!
She invented the SingerSongwriter Circus, she is a passionte singer and songwriter herself, her new album will be released this year, and we were lucky enough to get a first glimpse.
It sure was a fun idea to ask producer and comedian Clemens Haipl for a review of his most important tools. There was no need to test it, since he already produced records with it. Balancing between extremely goofy and very knowledgeable Clemens took a rather unorthodox approach to reviewing the Oxygen 25 indeed. We had some work shortening the original 80 minute session to fit into our show, an effort that was worth it .
Originally form Portland Oregon, he stopped by Vienna as part of his european tour. He intended to end the reign of sorrowful love songs and come up with the one to chronicle his very personal happy ending. Check out his beautiful performance to see if he succeeded.
The Neumann TLM 103 is a classic in studios all over the world and we had the chief of Scope Audio in Vienna have a look at it, to see whether it would fulfill all his needs.
Newcomer artist Sara Snow provided the female voice and Nikki contributed some guitar licks.
He does not want to be characterized or labeled so check out Renato Unterberg and his energetic show. Backstage he looks so shy but on stage his true colors show.
